CURE, and by default Colorado-CURE, as an organization does not provide legal assistance, however we do get asked about legal references for those who have been incarcerated and concerned about their rights under the Constitution, As one of our organization's goals is to insure that those who are incarcerated are treated in accordance with the 8th Amendment of the Constitution,

“Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”

~ Amendment XIII, United States Constitution

we feel providing information on these two free, widely used resources is appropriate.

The two manuals address issues based upon a Federal and constitutional basis, and do not necessarily address State specific statutes (laws).

Any other free legal resource that you would like to suggest would be appreciated.

The Jailhouse Lawyer’s Handbook

Note From the Editors

This handbook is a free resource for people in prison who wish to file a federal lawsuit addressing poor conditions in prison or abuse by prison staff.

It also contains limited general information about the United States legal system. This handbook is available for free to anyone: prisoners, families, friends, activists, lawyers and others.

We hope that you find this handbook helpful, and that it provides some aid in protecting your rights behind bars. Know that those of us on the outside are humbled and inspired by the incredible work so many of you do to protect your rights and dignity while inside. As you work your way through a legal system that is often frustrating and unfair, know that you are not alone in your struggles for justice.

The Jailhouse Lawyer Handbook is published by The Center for Constitutional Rights/national Lawyer's Guild
